Honoring Those who Make a Difference

The Department for Persons with Disabilities Family is proud to announce that we will be honoring Monsignor John Hart, of Assumption Parish in Morristown; DPD Board Member John Butler and the New Jersey State Police in Sussex County at our 43rd Annual Wiegand Farm Golf Classic (Sponsored by Lakeland Bank and Eastern Propane).

The Wiegand Farm Golf Classic is DPD's largest fundraiser of the year, netting over $100,000 in 2016 and attracting over 250 golfers. This event has grown steadily over the years increasing in participation and funds raised each of the past six years. This year, the Wiegand Farm Golf Classic is moving to Sussex County and Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg.

The event features a full day of golf on two courses followed by a banquet, awards ceremony and silent auction at the ballroom at Grand Cascades Lodge.

Monsignor John E. Hart, will be awarded with DPD's Humanitarian of the Year Award; given annually to a person who exemplifies the ideals of Catholic Social Teaching and who displays kindness and a willingness to help those in need.

Monsignor Hart is a longtime member of the Diocese of Paterson Family, growing up as a parishioner of St. Phillip's Parish in Clifton, attending Woodrow Wilson High School and graduating from the former Neumann Prep in Wayne.  He attended college seminary at Seton Hall University  and completed his priesthood studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington.

Monsignor Hart's deacon internship was at Annunciation Parish in Wayne.  He was ordained to the priesthood at Annunciation Parish by Bishop Frank J. Rodimer on May 9, 1981. Monsignor Hart has filled assignments at Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham Township, St. Ann Parish in Parsippany, St. Cecilia Parish in Rockaway and was appointed by Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli as pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Morristown on September 8, 2009.

Monsignor Hart served as Bishop Rodimer's priest secretary and master of ceremonies from September 1990 until September 1996 and was named an Adjutant Judicial Vicar in 1995.  Msgr. Hart also served as the Chancellor of the Diocese of Paterson from February 25, 1999 to June 24, 2005. During this time he also served as a member of the Diocesan Review Board.  Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli appointed him Chairperson of the Presbyteral Council and Chair of the Diocesan Theological Commission. Monsignor Hart was later appointed director of clergy personnel for Paterson Diocese in 2012.

Msgr. Hart is a diocesan representative to the NJ  Catholic Conference Public Policy Committee. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus (Third Degree) and a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He is also a member of the Canon Law Society of America, the Canadian Canon Law Society and the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Pope John Paul II appointed him a Chaplain to the Holy Father on August 14, 2003 and he was appointed a Missionary of Mercy by our Holy Pope Francis in 2016.

DPD's Knight of Columbus the Year Award is a tribute to the Order's many good works.   This award is presented to a "Catholic Gentleman" who embodies the Knight's four core principles: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.  This year, we are proud to honor DPD Board Member, John Butler as our Knight of the Year.

John has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for nearly 50 years. He is a Past Grand Knight and the current Financial Secretary of Saint Therese Council  #6320 in Succasunna.  John is active in his council's disability drive and Christmas gift drive supporting the people who live in our programs.  John is also a trustee of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick in Morris County, a member of the Irish American Association of Northwest New Jersey and is a board member and past president of the St. Patrick's Day Parade of Morris County.

John has been a DPD Board Member for 7 years, where he has been an active member of the Finance, Fundraising and Wiegand Farm Golf Classic Committee.

The Jack Kelly Community Leadership Award is named in honor of Jack Kelly.  Jack is the Committee Chairman and Founder of the Wiegand Farm Golf Classic. Jack is a veteran of the United States Navy, served as Chief and Fire Marshall of the Jefferson Township Fire Department and has dedicated his life to community service.  This award is presented annually to a "public servant" (police, fire department, military, educator, etc.) who has made a lasting impact on the community.  This year we are proud to honor the Sussex County NJ State Police who serve our local community proudly and valiantly.

The DPD Family has 75 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Sussex County through our Support Coordination Program, Wallace House Group Home, Gruenert Center and other support services.  We are proud to stand by law enforcement as they put their lives on the line to keep us safe each day!

"Monsignor John Hart, John Butler and the New Jersey State Police in Sussex County embody the ideals of Catholic Social Teaching. Monsignor Hart has served 2 Bishops and has made the Diocese of Paterson proud for over 35 years.   John Butler is the ideal and a model board member; active in fundraising, organizational planning and advocates for our cause.  The Sussex County State Police work diligently to keep the Department for Persons with Disabilities safe.  We are truly blessed to know these wonderful individuals," Scott Milliken, DPD Executive Director.
